About Stuttering and having Tics
About the Project
This project is a personal story for me made with sound and visuals from feelings and experiences i had when i was younger. It is about stuttering and having tics, both with face expressions and sounds. I wanted to create the feeling that i have when i can’t finish a sentence, say a word, or making sounds without having control. This motion graphic is comunicating the feeling and the fustration of stuttering and having tics from my perspective, while it is showing how to control it.
Exploring the Feeling
I dove into the feeling and the memories i had. I still stutter and do tics, but it was worse when i was younger. I was thinking about colors, shapes, smells, episodes. About which situations and words i was stuttering the most. I also spoke with family and friends to gather information about sounds and words i said.
The IdeaI wanted to create the storyline with sound, and then do the visuals simply out of figures, frame by frame. I wanted to express the frustration and irritation i had, when i couldn't say a word or had many tics.
I wanted to create a very stressful beginning, so the viewer could feel the stress, frustration and irritation, then a moment of breath to calm down, and then use the same sounds and figures to create harmony in all the stuttering and sounds i said. So all the sounds and words are still there, but there is harmony and they are allowing each other to be there.
The Process
I created the soundscape with my friend Matteo, entirely with sounds from my mouth. Things i said and still says and the words and situations i stutter/stuttered the most. We had 12 sounds and many words to use.
After the recordings where we made a stressful part and a beat, where we also tweaked on the sounds.
It was now much easier to visualize the look of the motion graphic. I only wanted to use simple figures to express the feelings. I made a fast simple storyboard and a sound catalog where i gave every sound a figure that would appear like a band in the second act of the motion graphic. The harmony act.
